alcala recently appointed to board
Kelly Alcala, recently named to the Madison Township board by the
Republican caucus, wants to bring a new outlook to the board.
“I have been attending the Madison Township board meetings for quite
some time, and local government has always interested me,” she said.
“I feel that Madison Township needs a change. We have had for a
while men on this advisory board, and I think a woman could be a
nice change. I also represent a younger group of the community that
has different viewpoints and ideas.”
Alcala, 28, is replacing George Robertson, who moved out of Madison
Township. Betty Need finished second in the caucus results.
Alcala is a stay-at-home mother with three children. Her spouse is
Juan Alcala, the EMS coordinator for the Madison Township Fire
Department. She assured that she would abstain from any vote that
had to do with her husband’s salary.
Jeff Quyle, a member of the caucus and Morgan County Commissioner,
had positive things to say about Alcala.
“Kelly’s youth was a positive factor in the process. She can reflect
and appeal to the many township residents who have children and
quality-of-life concerns related to that way of life, and bring
those thoughts into the township’s decision-making process.
“All of the candidates made good presentations and demonstrated that
they had appealing abilities,” he said. “Kelly did work to contact
committeemen before the meeting, showing she will take the
initiative. She also discussed the importance of serving in office
and making the effort to discuss and explain issues, and I think
that commitment to communication will serve the township population
well.
“If most citizens heard an explanation of how and why many decisions
were made, I think they would be satisfied, but in the absence of
such explanations, there is a mushrooming of false information,
misinformation and disinformation that creates distrust.”
Alcala agreed.
“This township really needs someone that can come in and listen to
what the people want. People are entitled to their opinion and
everyone has a different one; that is OK.
“You have to listen to people, give them a chance to say what they
need to say and then talk calmly and explain things well without
getting defensive just because someone may not agree with you. There
is a real need for discussions without arguments, because arguing
gets us nowhere fast. I feel that I have the listening and people
skills needed to get this done.”
Alcala has over eight years of experience working in the insurance
field, last working at American United Life Insurance Company in the
retirement division. She is currently an independent consultant for
Mary Kay Cosmetics and is going back to school to get her teaching
license in special education. She has an associates degree in
business from Ivy Tech College.
She is involved at her church, Friendswood Baptist Church, and with
the PTF at her son’s school, Mooresville Christian School (which she
also attended from grades kindergarten through ninth).
“With my education, work experience and conservative views as a
woman, I definitely think I can get the job done and represent the
community well in this position,” Alcala said.
